Only scribes would know how to read or write. Scribes would go to special schools to learn how to read and write hieroglyphics. This was a hard task because there were many letters to learn. Students would practice on papyrus scrolls and flakes of limestone. They wrote down the lifestyle and the way of living for Egyptians. Scribes would write down simple things such as how much grain was harvested that day to the first treaty. Not everyone could became a scribe. Only the children of scribes could became scribes. Some children of craftsmen would become scribes. Scribes were usually men. It was a four to five year process to became a scribe. Scribes would write on papyrus scrolls using reed brushes dipped in ink. Egyptians made ink by grinding brightly colored minerals into powered. Then, they would mix that powder with liquid making it easier to use.
